Righthand Fork Salt-Pipe Creek Restoration
V3 Companies spearheaded a comprehensive restoration project for Lake Santee, a 214-acre impoundment facing significant sedimentation, erosion, and water quality challenges. This initiative aimed to mitigate sediment inflow from the Salt-Pipe Creek watershed, enhance water quality, and improve recreational use.
Challenges:
Sedimentation: Lake Santee receives approximately 4,000 cubic yards of suspended sediment annually, impairing recreational activities and boating.
Water Quality: Frequent algal blooms and overall water quality degradation.
High Costs: Dredging the most affected areas would exceed $1.7 million, with ongoing algae control efforts costing over $40,000 per year.
Project Goals:
Address sediment load from Righthand Fork Salt Creek before it enters the lake.
Improve water quality and reduce algal blooms.
Enhance recreational use and aesthetic value of the lake.
Key Features:
Sediment Retention Basins: In-line basins to capture sediment before it reaches the lake.
Bank Stabilizations: Reinforced banks to prevent erosion.
In-Stream Habitat Structures: Created habitats to support aquatic life and improve water quality.
Funding and Support:
Secured a 205(j) grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
Applied for additional funding through Indiana’s Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) program.
Ongoing support in pursuing further funding sources.
Results: V3’s holistic, ecological design provided a low-cost, high-efficiency solution that significantly improved the aquatic ecosystem. The project delivered dual recreational and ecological benefits with minimal maintenance requirements, ensuring a sustainable and enjoyable environment for Lake Santee residents and visitors.
