54th Avenue Resource Road Upgrade
As one of Bonnyville’s primary roadways, 54th Avenue is lined with several businesses. When it came time for infrastructure improvements such as roadway widening and water main extension, it was crucial to create truck detour routes while providing full-time business access during construction. We met with business owners along the route to develop a detailed traffic accommodation plan and full-access phasing schedule within the project limits. Our design addressed existing standing water drainage issues by developing a custom roadway section that blends elements of the Town’s standard arterial street section and two-lane rural section. Thanks to our project diligence, ongoing stakeholder support, and careful estimates and budgeting, Bonnyville received significant upgrades with as minimal disruption as possible.

Project highlights:
- This infrastructure project involved the widening of 2.2 km of roadway, extending 2150 meters of water main and 800 meters of sanitary sewer, and addressing poor stormwater management.
- To aid storm management, roadside ditches were designed to often slope independently of the roadway centerline while still complying with the Town’s Master Drainage Plan.
- Because the project is jointly funded by a grant from Alberta Transportation and a Local Improvement Tax, V3 developed a very detailed cost estimate early in the design to support the grant application as well as provide values for the Local Improvement Tax bylaw.
- The actual contracted construction value was within 10% of the original project estimate, which was critical because a large discrepancy between the estimate and the contractor’s tender amount would have resulted in the project being shelved.
- We provided ongoing coordination between business owners and contractors to ensure access is unimpeded as construction progresses.
