Through cutting-edge technology and vast field experience, V3’s municipal and water engineers have the talent and tools to solve community challenges and design tomorrow’s water systems. Discover how our expertise is helping to guide a move by one of the largest technology companies in the world.
Setting the stage
The Village of Hebron is in a period of accelerated development. After a major technology company expressed interest in building a new data center on 300 acres of farmland, the Ohio township officials needed to verify whether the current infrastructure could support such a large-scale expansion.
V3 was hired to test Hebron’s existing water system and determine future functionality in light of this development. To do so, our municipal engineers had to first gain a thorough understanding of the system’s current state, uncovering the location, connectivity, and lifespan of every pipe.
Our team worked closely with the Village of Hebron’s water superintendent and used geographic information system (GIS) mapping and as-built records to construct a model of Hebron’s water system. After inputting data on pipe models, lengths, diameters, and more, the model created the foundation for what’s to come.
Preparing for all scenarios
Once the system model was built, our engineers utilized an innovative new program called Aquanuity to test both current and projected dynamic demands in real time. Building a massive warehouse on farmland creates different water-system strains, so in order to ensure the community isn’t negatively affected, our engineers began running a vast range of tests to see how the system would function.
Modeling scenarios include everything from normal day-to-day operations to the worst possible circumstances. The system needs to keep water moving whether there’s a fire or a flood.
In addition to testing system constraints, our engineers also examined how system changes may affect water quality. With the tech development essentially doubling demand on the water system, our team is ensuring drinking water stays within healthy ranges.
Providing expert recommendations
This water modeling project is still underway, but when complete, both the Village and developer are relying on our engineers to recommend any necessary system upgrades. Construction cannot commence until we identify all areas in need of improvement.
Our team is well versed in designing water systems for rapidly growing communities. After years of extensive water management work in Haiti and other developing countries, we’re now bringing that expertise back home in the Midwest.
“Our work is all about solving big puzzles. When a model works, there’s no better feeling in engineering. Seeing a model translate into real life and have everything be successful is incredibly gratifying.”
