Land survey isn’t just about taking measurements: it’s an art, combining history, data, and vision. See how V3 Project Surveyor Svetlana Koleva infuses engineering know-how and unbridled curiosity to piece together plats for the future.
Mapping the right path
Growing up in Bulgaria, Svetlana was a voracious learner, drawn to math and geology. Engineering perked her interest early on, and when her older sister got accepted into an engineering school, Svetlana’s competitive nature propelled her to follow suit. She studied underground construction and earned her engineering degree from the Higher Institute of Mining & Geology in Bulgaria before immigrating to the United States in 1998.
Upon arriving in Chicago, underground construction jobs were limited, so Svetlana changed gears and took a surveying role at V3. That shift unlocked a newfound passion for how projects come to life.
“My engineering background has helped me understand projects from many angles. I’m always thinking ahead because I know what designers and other professionals will need along the way.”
Uncovering the past, designing the future

Svetlana’s work as a project surveyor combines her technical skills with research and artistic savvy. To get the most accurate data, she often must dig through maps and documents dating back to the Great Chicago Fire, deciphering plans and ideas from centuries ago.
“I’m not only a surveyor, I’m also a historian! You never know what you’ll find in old documents. Sometimes when you’re reading it’s like wow, they used to do things totally differently. But this old data helps inform future plans.”
Merging historical records and field data into one cohesive map takes precision and creativity; Svetlana drafts plats with a variety of tools, producing detailed 2D and 3D visuals. She loves integrating the latest technology into the process, finding new ways to level up her workflow.
“Technology is helping a lot with manual labor. It’s bringing speed and efficiency to the process. Even in just the last few years, we’ve brought in new scanners and drones that are helping us be more productive. It makes me excited for the future because I know things will get even better.”
Svetlana often works on multiple projects at a time, but that variety keeps her energized. A recent stand-out project was her involvement in the Elgin-O’Hare Western Access tollway expansion which challenged her to work with large internal and external teams, as well as generate different as-builts through multiple construction phases.
“Every project is different and I never get bored. With survey, you become an artist, drafting something you’ve never seen in your life, piecing together field data and other information to make the final product. It’s a lot of fun!”
Bloom where you’re planted
When she’s not creating maps, Svetlana uses them to explore; she loves being outside and aims to see all 63 national parks with her family. She’s also an avid gardener and has collected more than 30 orchids, each of which brings color and joy to her home all year round.
After being at V3 for 24 years, Svetlana can’t imagine being anywhere else. Her love for her work and teammates shines through every interaction.
“I love working with my team. Their energy, innovation, and embrace of technology have kept me here all these years. V3 is a dynamic, forward-thinking company not just for how we approach projects, but for our dedication to employees. I love being a part of it.”
