Environmental scientists see properties at their worst and deliver solutions for positive change. See how V3 Project Scientist Josh Buckel blends methodical exploration with a curiosity for the macabre to dive into projects that scare others away.
Digging into the unknown
Growing up, Josh always had a knack for science and math but wasn’t sure how to translate those interests into a fulfilling career. As a chemistry major at Purdue University, he explored the pharmaceutical route but the classwork wasn’t captivating; his drive to serve the public in a more meaningful way kept him searching.
He eventually landed an internship with the Indiana State Department of Environmental Management, which opened his eyes to a whole new world.
“At the time, the environmental field wasn’t on my radar. But once I got into it, I didn’t look back. I liked being outside and taking samples; I wanted to help people by investigating these sites and coming up with beneficial solutions.”
Josh worked in the field for several years until a former coworker recruited him to join the new Environmental group at V3. He was instantly drawn to the firm’s passion and size, feeling like he could make a real difference.
“At V3, people don’t get lost in the shuffle. You aren’t just part of the machine: you get in-depth with projects and collaborate across teams. It’s really fun to be a part of.”
I ain’t afraid of no ghosts
Since starting at V3 in 2023, Josh has expanded his skillset beyond field work into project management, overseeing brownfield assessments and grant funding. Not only does he help with logging soil samples and installing monitoring wells, but he also writes extensive project reports that support communities in need of EPA backing.
The Environmental team has the unique ability to look past a site’s problems and see the potential, uncovering urban diamonds in the rough. For Josh, it’s one of the most fulfilling parts of his job.
“So many of the sites we work on sit vacant for years. They struggle with environmental concerns and are real eye sores. But we show people what could be developed and how that would benefit the community. No one wants to touch these sites, but we create the opportunity for a new park, library, or housing development.”
Many of the neglected sites have an almost haunted air, but for someone who loves the horror genre, Josh rises to the challenge. He’s explored abandoned hospitals, hotels, and funeral homes, only to help put the wheels in motion for community change.
“Some of these sites can seem pretty scary: no one wants the liability of contaminated air or soil. But we do right by our clients by giving them honest assessments of what’s at stake. People at V3 have a genuine curiosity for what’s possible; you don’t get that everywhere.”
One of his favorite projects is a brownfield site that’s currently being transformed into a neighborhood park. This work will provide a clean, safe recreation space for underserved Lebanon residents while ridding the environment of harmful elements.
Bringing sites out of the shadows
When he’s not transforming environments, Josh enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and 12-lb mini dachshund. Their favorite holiday is Halloween and together they’re planning a trip to Salem this fall. Never one to shy away from a spooky story, he’s working his way through Stephen King’s entire 65-book catalog, with his favorite so far being Pet Sematary.
Looking ahead, Josh is excited to earn more environmental certifications and find new ways to expand his team’s capabilities.
“Everything at V3 is connected. The more we work together and combine specialties, the more we’re able to help. I’m looking forward to the continued evolution of our group and showing people what we can do.”
