Surveyors search high and low to gather information, and for V3’s Charlotte Survey Group Leader Jonathan Crowe, the search for what’s next is all part of the thrill. Learn more about how his passion for learning is inspiring growth for himself, his team, and V3 as a whole.
Exploring boundaries
Jonathan’s fascination with how things get built started early. As a kid, he enjoyed looking at house plans and had a knack for geometry, leading him on a path towards architecture. But rather than commit to one career right out of high school, he decided to explore options such as carpentry and trade work first.
Those experiences eventually led him back to school at age 21, where he studied civil engineering at UNC Charlotte. His on-campus and early work experiences exposed him to a wide variety of specialties including water, air quality, and design. It wasn’t until he spent a few years as an engineer that he came upon his true calling.
“With survey, it just clicked. Engineering was more of a struggle for me; I instantly had a better understanding of orienteering and mapping. Once I found this path I knew it was where I wanted to stay.”
Jonathan earned his survey licensure and worked his way up to project management before joining V3 in 2024.
“I chose V3 because of the growth potential. After being pigeon-holed in the past, I wanted more diversity in my work and the types of projects. Charlotte has so much room to grow, it felt like the right fit.”
Setting high benchmarks

As Charlotte’s Survey Group Leader, Jonathan’s first priority is his team. He starts everyday with checking in on his field crew, ensuring they have what they need and addressing any issues. He then switches gears to his office team and jumps in with reviewing proposals, drafting plats, and addressing client questions.
Surveyors must stay on top of rapid technology advancements, so professional development is key; Jonathan is a huge advocate for continuing education and encourages his team to pursue extra licensure and certifications. Whether his team is flying new drones or learning LiDAR, Jonathan and crew are ahead of the curve.
“I really enjoy growing our group. We have big aspirations in Charlotte, and there’s been such positive interactions on how to achieve our goals. Everyone’s been open and adaptable to what’s possible; I get nervous but excited when I think about what’s next.”
That open collaboration has helped Jonathan expand not only his skills but regional knowledge base. Though based in Charlotte, he’s been pulled into projects across North America, learning about the unique nuances and challenges across states.
“It’s so important to have not only the support of a large survey group that’s been doing this for so long but also the independence to approach challenges with our own style. V3 is not rigid. We adapt and figure out how to help each other grow.”
Off the beaten path
Outside of work, Jonathan devotes his attention to his wife and two daughters, traveling to the beach to the mountains and back again. He loves climbing, hiking, and cooking, and also dabbles in playing drums.
Jonathan continues to lead by example; he’s currently working towards his South Carolina survey licensure and is excited to help support V3’s new Greenville office. No matter the challenge ahead, Jonathan is ready to make a difference.
“I am excited about the possibilities the future holds to grow our group locally as well as expand our geographical footprint. We’re all optimistic about working together and building our teams—that’s the goal.”
