City of Geneva’s South Street Bridge Emergency Superstructure Replacement Project was selected to receive the Project of the Year Award in the category: Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair (Less than $5 Million) for the Fox Valley APWA Branch.
The City of Geneva identified concerns regarding the South Street Bridge and upon V3 conducting a structural inspection and evaluation, it was determined the bridge had deteriorated to where it needed to be closed immediately for public safety. Lacking advance warning to the public and with South Street being a main thoroughfare, the City wanted to conduct repairs and reopen the bridge as quickly as possible. Upon evaluating options, it was determined that the most efficient, cost-effective solution was to replace the bridge.
V3 proposed an expedited schedule to design the replacement and execute the construction under an open book, at-risk construction management delivery. This allowed V3 to allocate resources for the demolition of the existing bridge and line up the required trade contracts concurrent with the design progress. Construction authorization was given in October, work commenced immediately and the bridge was reopened on November 19.
