Developing our built world takes creativity and problem solving, and for V3 Project Engineer Dan Soder, finding that balance is part of the fun. Find out how his love for taking on new challenges is helping shape land development in Charlotte and beyond.
Finding the right path
Dan grew up understanding what it takes to get things built. His dad worked in construction, laying the foundation for a future in land development. While Dan initially wasn’t sure what kind of career would best suit his interests, his dad suggested civil engineering, and the coursework at the New Jersey Institute of Technology proved to be a great fit.
After graduation, Dan joined a transportation-focused firm where he contributed to notable projects such as improvements to Newark Liberty International Airport. The work was interesting, but after a few years he craved a different challenge. A job change for his wife prompted a move to Charlotte in 2021, where land development was in huge demand. Dan was intrigued by this new market and found his way to Bloc Design, which merged with V3 that same year.
The firm crossed off everything on his wish list: a diverse set of projects and a tight-knit company culture. Right from the start he appreciated the team’s close, collaborative feel; even today, that same energy keeps him inspired.
“Working with good people is super important to me. When you’re with people for 8-10 hours a day, having that strong backing makes all the difference. Projects are important, but so are the people. At V3, we have a good time and also get the job done.”
Jack of all trades

As a Project Engineer, Dan works on a multitude of projects, from single-family subdivisions to industrial warehouses. His designs set the vision for what’s to come, and he enjoys mapping out the ins and outs of stormwater management, grading, ADA compliance, and more.
Charlotte developers face many unique obstacles: not only is there not a lot of land, but what’s available often comes with problematic topography, from rolling hills to muddy swamps. Dan is tasked with finding ways to maximize a site’s potential, designing the most effective layout possible with the smallest footprint. It’s a challenge he enjoys.
“I can’t do the same mundane things every day. I like changing it up; one day I’m working in Rock Hill, SC, the next I’m in Hendersonville, NC. Having different challenges on my plate keeps me going.”
One project that put that mindset to the test was a Sheetz convenience store in Statesville, NC. Located on top of a stream and wetlands, the location presented endless design hurdles, requiring extensive offsite drainage work that included massive retaining walls, a stream crossing, and two 60” culverts. That complicated problem solving emboldened Dan moving forward.
“It was stressful at the time, but looking back it was such a great learning experience. After figuring out all those design problems it felt like, wow, I can take on anything now!”
Dan shares all this knowledge with the younger members of his team and enjoys advising newcomers and interns. Moving from a mentee to a mentor role has further deepened his connection to his work.
“When I was the new guy coming in, I didn’t have much land development experience. While I still have things to learn, I really enjoy teaching others, giving my tips and tricks.”
Racing towards the next adventure

As Dan helps build Charlotte, Charlotte helps fuel Dan’s passions. He’s an avid dirt biker and motorcycle enthusiast, often riding off road with his wife. He’s very active; he loves running and playing sports like volleyball and flag football but also unwinds with video games and hanging with his two cats and black lab, Maddie.
As he keeps exploring new challenges, Dan looks forward to taking on even more responsibilities and making an impact on the world around him.
“I take pride in being a jack of all trades, but I have become a more experienced engineer here who helps and teaches the newcomers. Charlotte has a lot of development left and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
