IL Route 171 & New Avenue Feasibility Study & Phase I
IL Route 171 needed to address safety and capacity concerns associated with an unsignalized, three-leg intersection. Most accidents that occurred at the intersection were rear-end crashes and primarily on the eastbound New Avenue approach, so our team was brought in to develop and evaluate five conceptual alternatives involving both signalized and unsignalized intersections with a free-flow, right-turn-slip lane, as well as three variations of two-lane roundabouts. We also identified improvement funding options and assisted the city with grant application materials. Our efforts helped improve channelization and operations at the intersection to encourage more efficient traffic flow and reduce accidents.

Project Highlights:
- In an effort to meet the 2050 traffic demands, the proposed improvements add capacity to the intersection by installing a new traffic signal, increasing the southbound through and northbound left storage on IL Route 171, and adding dedicated left and right turn lanes on the eastbound approach of New Avenue.
- We conducted Phase I preliminary engineering and environmental studies processed through IDOT Bureau of Local Roads and Streets. The Phase I process involved preparation of a full report State Categorical Exclusion.
